Founded as a mere comptoir horloger (watch store) by Auguste Agassiz in 1832 and named "Agassiz & Compagnie" , 1866 the Longines took on this name.

On that year, Ernest Francillon, nephew of Agassiz, bought a land for his watch factory, in a hamlet of Saint-Imier, little town on the Canton of Bern. This village was located in the extreme north-west of Switzerland at a place called "Les Longines" on the banks of the river Suze. To develop the machines necessary for production, 1867 Francillon sought the assistance of a young engineer named Jacques David, who undertook the mechanisation of the production process. In addition the same year he had already adopted the symbol of quality and security against falsification attempts.

The brand of the winged hourglass has the know-how made of tradition, elegance and performance and has become famous in the time specially in the sport field, and not only. Longines provided timers used at the first modern Olympics in 1896 in Athens. Longines has provided the watches required to set and then certify numerous world flight records - not least Charles Lindbergh's 1927 first nonstop solo crossing of the North Atlantic. Also in the 1942 in the movie "Casablanca" Humphrey Bogart wears a Longines watch with a tonneau-shaped case.
