IWC has recently presented a new TOP GUN line in the Pilot's Watches collection.

TOP GUN watches, produced by the Schaffhausen factory since 2007, are named after the U.S. Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program. Navy.

Watches designed with robust materials, such as ceramics and titanium, to meet the special needs of elite pilots subject to enormous extreme acceleration forces.

"In the new TOP GUN line - said Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen - for the first time we use Ceratanium in a Pilot's Watch. This material combines the excellent properties of titanium and ceramics and has allowed us to create our first completely black model, without coating, in all of its components, including buttons or buckles.

Developed by IWC, Ceratanium is a patented material that combines the advantages of titanium and ceramics in a revolutionary formula. The production process of this alloy involves various phases and is very complex, in addition the raw material must have a very high degree of purity. The rough piece is worked to give the various components of the box their final shape. Then follows a cycle in the oven. During this process, oxygen diffuses into the material and the metal surface becomes ceramic. With this special finish, the material acquires the typical properties of ceramics, such as extreme hardness and scratch resistance and also achieves an amazing matt black color. Unlike conventional coating methods such as DLC, which can be separated from the substrate or peeled off, the Ceratanium surface adheres permanently to the material. It is also distinguished by its high resistance to corrosion, its excellent skin tolerance and its matt black color.

"With the first sand-colored ceramic case - underlined Christoph Grainger-Herr - that perfectly matches the uniforms worn by U.S. pilots. Navy, we also demonstrate the high skills of IWC in materials. "

Inspired by the Mojave Desert, home to the Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake, the largest land area in the U.S. Navy, the sand-colored ceramic is the result of a combination of zirconium oxide with other metal oxides.
