Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup
Organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaboration with the
IMA (International Maxi Association) and the title sponsor of the Rolex Maxi
Yacht Rolex Cup is scheduled until 10 September. Now in its 27th edition 52
yachts divided into seven categories take part: Supermaxis, Maxi Racing, Racing
Cruising Maxi, Mini Maxi Racing, Mini Maxi Racing Cruising, Wally and Maxi
The phenomenon of the maxi yachts arose in the late sixties with
Raul Gardini and Baron de Rothschild as founding fathers. It was a small
America's Cup in Porto Cervo, a naval battle which was also a great excuse to
extend the tourist season and resulted in a record number of guests.
"It is certainly the largest fleet ever hosted before - said
Riccardo Bonadeo, Commodore of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda - for this event,
but it is also the most impressive in terms of quality. The technology and
design shown here at the dock expresses the best in shipbuilding and boasts the
best maxi yacht fleet racing out there."
The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is an event that combines tradition and
innovation and, as pointed out by Mr. Andrew McIrvine Secretary General of IMA,
"for over 30 years is one of the most important showcases for Maxi". At the end
of the competition, the winners of each category will be rewarded with a Rolex
Yacht-Master Watch clock at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda which was founded May
12, 1967 and chaired by Shah Karim al-Husayni, better known as Aga Khan.
